What Do I Teach?

I teach beginners - intermediate students interested in advancing their training. Both adults and children are welcome! My education in classical piano has given me the tools to teach proper technique and performance. My goal is to give students the love of playing the piano in their chosen genre!

Piano Basics and beyond . . .

What are the basics in piano?  Correct posture at the instrument,  to read notes, rhythms, and how to move the fingers, hands & arms in a relaxed manner.  We start with this and move on to understand more about music theory, the structure inherent in pieces of music, the eras (music history), the composers, and even how to interpret music.  It's a wonderful lifetime skill with much to learn!

Article on benefits.

The benefits for children. . .

Children:  Fun! Develops skills in focus, reading, listening, time management,  early math, & fine motor.   Lessons build confidence & helps to develop good study principles. Children with musical training go on to have better neural connections, memory &  IQ, and better information processing. In summary, the time spent learning notes and songs primes their short and long-term memory for academic use later on.

The benefits for adults . . .

Adults:  Fun!  Develops eye hand coordination, concentration, & memory enhancement.  Self esteem is developed as you master each level within this skill.  Taking piano lessons is a  great creative outlet and 'down time' for the self!  This is a great way to de-stress and take a break from the responsibilities in life! Did you know that music has also been shown to reduce heart and respiratory rates, cardiac complications, and to lower blood pressure and increase immune response. It's also a great exercise to 'light up the brain' thereby strengthening neural connections; simultaneous use of the brain, ears, hands/fingers.

Reviews

“Marie has been an excellent teacher for our daughter.  Her knowledge of the instrument and how to teach it is wonderful.  Our daughter is now able to learn on her own, and play both classics and modern music!  Just what we had hoped!”
